What Are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a type of ultra-thin dental veneer made from a patented type of porcelain known as Cerinate. They’re custom-made to fit over the surface of your teeth and improve their appearance. Lumineers are an ideal solution for people who want to improve the look of their teeth but don’t want to undergo invasive procedures.

The thinness of Lumineers allows them to be placed directly onto the teeth without enamel removal. In most cases, the Lumineers placement is reversible, meaning that your natural tooth structure stays intact.

Benefits of Lumineers

There are several benefits to Lumineers, including;

  • Minimal tooth preparation: Lumineers require minimal to no tooth preparation, preserving your natural tooth structure.
  • Non-invasive: Unlike traditional veneers, Lumineers are reversible and don’t require dental sedation.
  • Durability: Lumineers are made from high-quality, durable porcelain that can last more than 20 years with proper care.
  • Stain resistance: The dental porcelain in Lumineers is resistant to stains, keeping your smile bright and vibrant.
  • Natural appearance: Lumineers are designed to mimic the appearance of natural teeth, providing a natural-looking smile.

Candidacy for Lumineers

To qualify for Lumineers, you’ll need:

  • Mild to moderate dental imperfections: Lumineers are ideal for correcting mild to moderate cosmetic dental concerns, such as discoloration, chipped teeth, gaps, or minor misalignments.
  • Sufficient tooth enamel: Candidates should have enough healthy tooth enamel to ensure proper bonding of the Lumineers.
  • Good oral health: Candidates need good oral hygiene and healthy gums to support the long-term success of Lumineers.
  • Realistic expectations: Candidates need realistic expectations about the results and understand the limitations of Lumineers.

The Lumineers Process

Initial Consultation

The first step is a consultation with our Northridge dentist. During this appointment, Dr. Gropp will discuss your dental health and aesthetic goals and evaluate whether Lumineers are an appropriate treatment option.

If you’re a candidate for Lumineers, our Northridge dentist will take an impression or mold of your teeth. This mold will be sent to a dental laboratory where your Lumineers will be custom-made to fit your teeth and match your desired tooth color.

During this stage, unlike traditional veneers, there’s usually no need for extensive tooth reshaping or temporary veneers while you wait for your Lumineers to be created. This is because Lumineers are so thin (approximately 0.2 mm) and highly translucent, allowing them to replicate the natural appearance of enamel without significant tooth alteration.

Once your Lumineers are ready, you’ll return to our Northridge dentist’s office for the application appointment. Dr. Gropp will place the Lumineers onto your teeth to check the fit and color. We can make any adjustments at this point before attaching them. Once you’re satisfied with the fit and appearance, we’ll clean your teeth and etch them (a process to make the tooth surface rougher) for a strong bonding process.

After this, Dr. Gropp applies a special cement to the Lumineers and places them onto your teeth. A curing light then hardens the cement and bonds the Lumineers to your teeth. Any excess cement is removed, and final adjustments are made as needed.

Dr. Gropp may want to schedule a follow-up appointment at our Northridge dental office to check on your Lumineers and your bite and to address any questions or concerns you may have after the procedure.

How Much Do Lumineers Cost?

The cost of Lumineers can vary depending on several factors, including the number of teeth being treated, the complexity of the case, the location of the dental practice, and additional procedures required. Generally, Lumineers tend to be more expensive than traditional veneers due to their advanced technology and customization.

On average, the cost of Lumineers can range from $800 to $2,000 per tooth. It’s recommended to consult with your dentist to receive a personalized treatment plan and accurate cost estimate based on your specific needs and circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Lumineers be removed if needed?

Yes, Lumineers are a reversible cosmetic dental treatment. Since they require minimal-to-no tooth preparation, they can be removed without causing damage to the underlying teeth. However, it’s important to consult with a qualified dentist for the proper removal procedure to ensure the preservation of your natural teeth.

Are Lumineers painful to get?

The process of getting Lumineers is typically painless. Since minimal to no tooth preparation is required, there is generally no need for shots or anesthesia. The placement of Lumineers is a comfortable and non-invasive procedure. However, some individuals may experience slight sensitivity or discomfort during the adjustment period after the placement.
